5 Things We Love about Dual Enrollment

At HHCS, we love to celebrate every personal learning journey of our K-12 students.  Our small, safe, free public charter school embraces a holistic approach to education. Our students explore their abilities academically, socially, and athletically as they pursue their individual passions. We engage and support individual goals as we provide robust academics, thoughtful social-emotional learning and dynamic athletics and afterschool clubs.

For some of our HHCS high school students, a personal learning journey can include dual enrollment. Dual enrollment is concurrent enrollment in both HHCS and Allegheny College of Maryland. We enable our HHCS high school students to take college classes while they are still enrolled at our HHCS public K-12 school. Here are five reasons we love dual enrollment:

  1. These college classes count for both high school AND college credit, in some cases. HHCS high school students who complete dual enrollment classes might be able to take fewer classes in college. This saves money on total college costs!

  2. Our dual-enrollment programs give an added advantage in the admissions process. Dual enrollment prepares our HHCS Hornets for the rigors of college coursework alongside earning credits toward a degree.

  3. Most importantly, dual enrollment courses give our HHCS public charter high school students practice in being an effective college student. Our dual-enrolled HHCS students will enter college with a better understanding of many things; including the reading and writing required for an introductory level course or a professor's expectations. These early glimpses cannot be underestimated!

  4. While dual enrollment courses are unlikely to impact college GPA, most universities and colleges consider the grades you earn once you're an enrolled college student only. The goal here isn’t to get the top grade while a high school student, it’s to familiarize yourself with the rigor and demands of college, and to further test your academic passions and pursuits, as you prepare for college and which next step is right for YOU!

  5. Last but not least, good grades are never a bad idea. Earning a good grade in dual enrollment coursework is definitely a boost to a college application.
